Summary - 1966

The 24th Evac was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, when the initial order came to deploy to the Republic of Vietnam.  An Advance Party departed in June, and the main body arrived in-country in July.  Doctors and nurses were assigned in the fall.  Construction was done by the 169th Engineer Battalion, but much of the work was done by the NCOs and enlisted personnel of the 24th.

In this picture taken in late 1966, note that OR Tech Tim Morton is wearing standard state-side fatigues.  The patch on his sleeve is that of the 1st Logistical Command -the 24th's personnel would not wear the more familiar 44th Medical Brigade patch until August 1967.  Notice also that he is armed with the M14 rifle rather than the M16 which had not then been produced in sufficient quantity to arm all soldiers in Vietnam.
