Summary - 1970

Throughout 1970, the Nixon administration began to "Vietnamese the war" by assigning more combat responsibility to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam.  Despite this reduction in the number of American forces in South Vietnam, the medical requirements of the hospital remained extensive.  (Source: Lest we Forget Part II. Barnett and Foss)

The 24th Evacuation Hospital earned its third Meritorious Unit Award.  Quoting, in part, from the commendation:  " . . . Although hindered by personnel shortages and numerous mass casualty situations, the officers and men of the hospital provided excellent medical support to United States and Allied forces operating in the southern half of Military Region 2 and throughout Military Regions 3 and 4.  Through their untiring and vigorous application of specialized professional skills, the hospital staff administered highly effective treatment to over 15,000 patients.  In addition to rendering proper care to hospitalized personnel, the members of the 24th Evacuation Hospital willingly participated in the Medical Civic Action program which provided Neurosurgical and Maxillofacial services to local Vietnamese health care centers."

COL Charles Cochrane commanded the 24th Evacuation Hospital from July of 1970 to June of 1971.
