In the Mess Hall - We Feasted!

This is the menu for Christmas 1970.

The message from Creighton W. Abrams, (then) Commanding General of the U. S. Army (in case you can't read it.)

As we observe the birth of Christ, I wish to extend warmest season's greetings to each of you and to your families. Even though we are separated from our families and loved ones, we can take pride that they are celebrating Christmas 1970 in peace and security at home. As we face a coming new year, may we each pray for success in our mission of contributing to peace on earth and good will for all mankind.

The Christmas Prayer from Leonard F. Stegman, COL, U. S. Army staff chaplain.

Send, O God, into the darkness of this troubled world, the light of Thy Son: Let the star of Thy hope touch the minds of all men with the bright beams of Thy mercy and truth; and so direct our steps that we may ever walk in the way revealed to us, as the shepherds of Bethlehem walked with joy to the manger where He dwelt Who now and ever reigns in our hearts, Jesus Christ our Lord.

December 31

PFC Mic Mahoney lands in Vietnam and enjoys the fine food at "Alice's Restaurant" (the mess hall) at the 90th Replacement Battalion in Long Binh.    His quote from an email:

I actually landed on the 31st of December, 1970. Never forget that first night when at midnight all hell broke loose. We thought we were being attacked but it was just GI's celebrating New Years.
