April 1970

Summary to be Written

April 5 - Easter Sunday

SP5 Dick Kellogg, Lab Tech, rejoins "The World."  After spending some time in Hawaii and at home, he finished his Army time at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX, as the NCOIC of the blood donor center.  Dick went home to a temporary job with the U. S. Customs Service where he was encouraged to finish his degree work and went on to receive a graduate degree at Cal-State LA.  In 1974 he joined the Los Angeles police Department, where he rose to the rank of detective.  After 25 years, Dick and his family are now happily retired in Massachusetts.

An excerpt from an email message sent to the Webmaster:

"Maybe you can help me with the name of one of the patients who was at the 1993 reunion with his wife, a former Red Cross worker.  They came from Delaware to try to find out who the surgeon was that operated on him in 69.  He was shot through the eye and lost part of the frontal lobe of his brain.  My wife and I had breakfast with them and that's when I found out he was there while I was in charge of the transfusion section of the lab.   That would have been during the time Dr. Yang would have been doing neuros.  I hadn't seen Yang since I ran into him at Ft. Sam in 70.  I think it was on his last day in the service.    Anyway, I told them it might have been Yang and that he was supposed to be practicing up in the Seattle area.  They thanked me and went home.  The next day they were back, and at the morning brunch he spotted me across the room and started waving and yelling "Kellogg . . . .Kellogg."  He walked over to me and just stood in front of me smiling.  I said "Yeah, I'm Kellogg.  We had breakfast together yesterday."  His wife said "You don't understand.  We went home and went through the medical records again and your name was there on the transfusion work.  You crossed matched the blood and he just wanted to say thank you."   Then he threw a big bear hug on me.  Sometimes having helped somebody is worth all the baloney we sometimes had to put up with.  You know what I mean.
