Ken Bowen remembers baking pizza in the Lab oven!
The picture was taken in the wee
hours of the morning. Dr. Veatch and I are probably more than a
little fuzzy headed. I'm on the far left (with the can of Carling's
Black Label close at hand). Of course that's Major Veatch trying to
steady the organ or vice versa. Everett Hyman is facing the
camera and Dr. Kling (only half showing) is in the lotus pose on the far
right bench. Cherry and Dr. Kling were on duty so they're sober.
We're all waiting for the pizza to cook. Don't know who took the
picture.
Looking at the scene brought another
recollection. See the white boxes under the benches? They are styrofoam
containers for shipping blood. We had dozens of them and gave them out
to most all the hootches. They found another use with ice to chill beer
and soda. On movie nights at our outdoor theater (projector in a conex
box showing the movie on sheets tacked to plywood) we'd haul our folding
chairs with the blood box "coolers" to the show. During
monsoon season the movies would go on but we'd cover up with ponchos and
pull our feet up out of the water. Sometimes the styrofoam box would
float away and we'd find it the next day. (Source:
