1LT Liz Wilson returns to "The World." From an email:
One of the things I remember most about the 24th was a little girl that stole everybody's heart. I first met her when I was on Wards 5 & 6. Her name was Bout. She was a patient on Ward 10 for the better part of a year. Her mother and sister were killed on Christmas, 1969. Bout was 5 or 6 years old. She didn't get hurt too bad, as I remember, but she'd had polio when she was younger. When I was on Wards 9 & 10, we took her down to an orphanage in Saigon. She had maintained all along that her father was an ARVN soldier but we'd never seen or heard from him. About two weeks after we took her down to the orphanage, her father showed up. We felt bad that we hadn't waited longer. She translated for us late at night, when we could wake her. I have often wondered what happened to her in the intervening years. As I remember everyone knew who Bout was. I met her when we had a patient her age on Ward 6. Bout would come down in her adult sized wheelchair to visit the other child. Does anyone else remember Bout? (Source: Liz Wilson)
